What is facial acupuncture?

Facial acupuncture (also called cosmetic acupuncture) is a Korean medicine aesthetic treatment that places fine needles into facial acupoints and the fascial layer to improve skin elasticity, reduce wrinkles, and create a lifting effect. Without injecting any foreign substances such as botox or fillers, it produces a natural rejuvenating effect through the body's own collagen synthesis and improved blood flow. Internationally it is known as "cosmetic acupuncture" or "facial rejuvenation acupuncture" and continues to grow in popularity.

How microneedles stimulate collagen

Ultra-fine needles (0.12–0.16 mm in thickness) create microscopic injuries in the dermis, prompting the body to repair them by increasing the synthesis of type I and type III collagen and elastin. At the same time, acupuncture stimulation raises local blood flow by 30–40%, delivering more oxygen and nutrients while accelerating waste removal. Repeating this process gradually improves skin thickness and elasticity.

Whitening acupuncture and lifting acupuncture — by purpose

  • Whitening acupuncture: For those concerned about melasma or a dull complexion. Needles are placed at facial acupoints such as Sibai (ST2), Yingxiang (LI20), and Jiache (ST6) to promote melanin metabolism and brighten the complexion. Improved blood flow brings clarity to a dull skin tone.
  • Lifting acupuncture: For those concerned about sagging cheeks, a double chin, or nasolabial folds. Needles are arranged in specific patterns along the SMAS fascial layer and the direction of facial muscles to create a physical lifting effect. Relaxing the masseter muscle can also help improve a square jawline.

Treatment frequency and maintenance

The initial intensive course is 1–2 sessions per week, for a total of 8–10 sessions. Improvement in skin tone and elasticity is usually felt from the third or fourth session, and the lifting effect becomes clearly visible after the eighth session. After that, maintenance sessions every 2–4 weeks are recommended. Mild bruising may appear for 2–3 days after treatment but resolves on its own. Avoid alcohol and saunas on the day of treatment.
