Vocal Cord Nodules — Korean Medicine Treatment for Calluses on the Vocal Cords
Table of Contents
What are vocal cord nodules?
Vocal cord nodules are a condition in which callus-like hardened tissue forms on both sides of the vocal cord mucosa. Just like a knot on a guitar string disrupts vibration, these nodules make the vibration uneven, causing hoarseness, cracking, and a breathy voice quality.
Vocal cord nodules in Korean medicine: Phlegm-and-Stasis Obstructing the Throat (痰瘀阻喉)
In Korean traditional medicine, vocal cord nodules are seen as a state where phlegm (痰) and blood stasis (瘀血) accumulate in the throat.
- Phlegm (痰): Abnormal secretions and edematous tissue accumulated in the mucosa
- Blood stasis (瘀血): Microbleeds and tissue degeneration in the vocal cord mucosa from repeated friction
- Qi stagnation (氣滯): A state in which stress blocks the circulation of qi in the throat
Treatment process
- Modified Hyangseongpajeokhwan: The base formula is enhanced with phlegm-resolving (化痰) and stasis-removing (祛瘀) herbs
- Acupuncture: Stimulates throat-related acupoints such as Lianquan (廉泉), Hegu (合谷), and Lieque (列缺)
- Pharmacopuncture: Pharmacopuncture is applied to acupoints around the throat to relieve local inflammation
- Voice rest: Reducing speech as much as possible during treatment is essential
Surgery vs. Korean medicine treatment
Early-to-mid stage vocal cord nodules often improve with voice rest and Korean medicine treatment. When nodules are large and have become densely fibrotic, surgery may be necessary, and combining Korean medicine treatment after surgery is effective for preventing recurrence.
