Functional Dyspepsia

Q. Western drugs aren't working for functional dyspepsia — do herbs help?

A.

Functional dyspepsia is caused by impaired motility and visceral hypersensitivity, so herbs that fundamentally improve these are often more effective than Western medication. Constitution-matched prescription is key.

📝 Detailed Answer

There is a reason why conventional medication does not work well.

Medication for functional dyspepsia is generally a matter of reducing gastric acid or promoting gastric motility. Yet in this condition, gastric motility problems, hypersensitivity, stress and delayed gastric emptying are mixed differently in each person, so a single mechanism does not cover it all.

What differs in Korean medicine treatment is that we divide the approach according to the combination of symptoms. The prescription differs according to whether the epigastrium feels blocked or burning, whether belching is frequent, whether it responds to cold things, and whether it moves in step with stress.

However, if you have not had an endoscopy, please tell us at the consultation. If examination indicates it, we will arrange one. The possibility that it is not functional must be excluded.
