Chronic Cough

Post-nasal drip, reflux esophagitis, airway hypersensitivity and allergy are the typical causes. Korean medicine examines dysfunction of the lungs, spleen-stomach and liver together to treat the underlying cause.

Q. Cough lasting over a month after a cold — why?

A.

Damaged bronchial mucosa hasn't fully recovered, so hypersensitivity persists. Herbs that recover mucosa and strengthen lung function bring improvement.

📝 Detailed Answer

A cough lasting a long time after a cold is a common thing. It is because the state of heightened sensitivity in the airway mucosa continues for a few weeks even after the virus has gone.

This state is called post-infectious cough, and it generally settles with time. However, if you fall into a vicious circle where the cough irritates the airway and that irritation calls the cough back again, it lasts longer.

Korean medicine treatment approaches it by settling the sensitised mucosa and breaking this vicious circle.

However, once it goes past eight weeks another cause must be checked. Post-nasal drip, acid reflux and asthma hiding behind it are common. If blood-stained sputum, fever, weight loss or breathlessness is accompanying it, please be sure to tell us at the consultation. If examination indicates it, we will arrange a chest investigation.
