Two representative Korean medicine tonics

Gongjindan (拱辰丹) and Gyeongokgo (瓊玉膏) are considered the most renowned tonic herbal medicines in Korean medicine. Both replenish vital energy, but their ingredients and primary effects differ clearly. Choosing the right one for your constitution and health condition is important.

Characteristics of Gongjindan

Gongjindan is composed mainly of deer antler (Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum), Angelica gigas root, Cornus officinalis fruit, and musk (Moschus). It is excellent at strengthening liver and kidney function and replenishing heart blood (心血).

  • Rapid recovery from severe fatigue and decreased vitality
  • General weakness caused by overwork and stress
  • Decline in stamina and vigor due to aging from middle age onward
  • Support for concentration and brain activity in students and office workers

Characteristics of Gyeongokgo

Gyeongokgo is a paste-form herbal medicine (膏藥) made by carefully simmering fresh Rehmannia root (生地黃), Korean ginseng, Poria, and honey over a long period. It focuses on replenishing the yin energy of the lungs and stomach.

  • For those with weak respiratory systems prone to colds and coughs
  • Insufficient body fluids (津液) causing dry mouth and dry skin
  • Weak digestion and difficulty gaining weight
  • Strengthening stamina and immunity in growing children

Which one should you choose?

To put it simply, Gongjindan is suitable for boosting vitality in a short period, while Gyeongokgo is suitable for taking over a long time to gradually improve constitution. Since the effect of both prescriptions varies depending on individual constitution and current health condition, the most desirable approach is to consult a qualified Korean medicine doctor before deciding.
