Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Korean Medicine Treatment for Tinnitus

Summary

Eighteen randomized controlled trials (1,456 subjects total) evaluating Korean medicine treatment (acupuncture, herbal medicine, auricular acupuncture) for tinnitus were meta-analyzed. The Korean medicine group demonstrated an average 39% reduction in THI (Tinnitus Handicap Inventory) compared with 19% in controls. Effects were greatest when acupuncture and herbal medicine were combined.

Conclusion

Korean medicine combined treatment significantly improves subjective tinnitus distress and quality of life, and is recommended for patients with insufficient response to conventional therapy.
