Tiredness that doesn't go away even with rest

If you don't feel refreshed after a full night's sleep, and you slip into intense drowsiness and lethargy every afternoon, it may be more than ordinary tiredness. Fatigue lasting longer than six months is classified as chronic fatigue syndrome and signals that your whole-body energy metabolism has broken down.

Chronic fatigue has multiple causes

Korean medicine views chronic fatigue through three main lenses.

  • Qi deficiency (氣虛): A shortage of basic energy, often appearing alongside indigestion.
  • Blood deficiency (血虛): Insufficient blood means tissues don't receive enough nourishment. Dizziness and a pale complexion typically accompany it.
  • Dampness-phlegm (濕痰): Stagnant metabolic waste and fluid leave the body feeling heavy and the mind unclear.

Korean medicine treatment approach

Because chronic fatigue stems from a combination of factors rather than a single cause, treatment requires a comprehensive evaluation of constitution and symptoms before composing a custom prescription. When qi deficiency is dominant, formulas in the Bojungikgi-tang family are used; when blood deficiency leads, formulas based on Samul-tang; and when dampness-phlegm is the main pattern, prescriptions based on Ijin-tang. Combining acupuncture and moxibustion improves meridian circulation and accelerates recovery.

Why you shouldn't ignore fatigue

Chronic fatigue goes beyond mere discomfort, leading to a chain of health problems including weakened immunity, digestive issues, sleep disturbances, and reduced concentration. Don't dismiss it as "just getting older" — listen to the signal your body is sending. Identifying and managing the cause early can help you regain your vitality.
