Pediatric Rhinitis and Adenoid Hypertrophy — Nasal Congestion Holds Back Growth

How nasal congestion affects growth

Prolonged pediatric rhinitis is more than a simple nasal nuisance. A vicious cycle forms: nasal congestion to mouth breathing to sleep apnea to impaired deep sleep to reduced growth hormone secretion. When the adenoids enlarge, the nasopharynx (the space behind the nose) narrows further and the problem worsens. In fact, children with chronic mouth breathing can develop changes in facial bone development, leading to the elongated adenoid face.

Lung qi deficiency-cold (肺氣虛寒) and modified Sochongryong-tang

In Korean medicine, pediatric rhinitis most often arises in children with a lung qi deficiency-cold (肺氣虛寒) constitution. When the dispersing function of the lung is weak and unable to defend against cold and external pathogens, the nose runs with clear, watery mucus and frequent sneezing. The representative formula Sochongryong-tang (小靑龍湯) uses ephedra, asarum, and dried ginger to warm the lung, while pinellia and schisandra clear retained fluid (水飮).

  • Predominantly clear runny nose: base Sochongryong-tang
  • Yellow mucus mixed in: add schizonepeta and lonicera to strengthen heat-clearing (淸熱)
  • Severe nasal congestion: add magnolia flower and xanthium fruit to open the orifices (通竅)

Korean medicine treatment for adenoid hypertrophy

Adenoid hypertrophy is the overproliferation of lymphoid tissue caused by repeated upper respiratory infections. Korean medicine views this as accumulated phlegm-heat (痰熱) lodged in the nasopharynx. Modified Sagan Mahwang-tang or detoxifying powder formulas are used to dissolve phlegm-heat, combined with acupuncture at points such as Yingxiang (LI20), Hegu (LI4), and Zusanli (ST36). With consistent treatment over 3 to 6 months, the adenoids often shrink and nasal breathing is restored.

Nasal irrigation and lifestyle care

Saline nasal irrigation morning and evening physically removes inflammatory substances from the nasal mucosa. Keep indoor humidity between 50 and 60%, and wash bedding in hot water every two weeks to control house dust mites. Swimming may irritate the nasal mucosa, so it is best avoided during periods of severe symptoms.
