Korean Medicine Calming Treatment for Startle and Hypersensitivity After a Pediatric Traffic Accident
Table of Contents
Patterns of hypersensitivity after an accident
A significant number of children who have been in a traffic accident develop sound sensitivity. They startle and cry or cling to a parent at car horns, slamming doors, or even sudden TV sound effects. Some children refuse to ride in a car at all, bursting into tears as soon as they get in or strongly resisting the car seat. Such hypersensitivity greatly restricts the child's daily life.
Korean medicine pattern — heart-spleen dual deficiency (心脾兩虛)
When the fright (gyeong, 驚) of an accident shakes the spirit of the heart (sim-sin, 心神), anxiety and startle responses appear; if persistent stress further depletes the transport-and-transformation function of the spleen (脾), decreased appetite, fatigue, and reduced concentration follow. This state is heart-spleen dual deficiency (心脾兩虛). The heart governs blood and the spleen produces blood, so when both are deficient, qi-blood insufficiency deepens, and emotional symptoms worsen in a vicious cycle.
Guibi-tang (歸脾湯) modification
Guibi-tang is the representative formula that simultaneously tonifies the heart and the spleen. Ginseng (insam, 人蔘) and astragalus (hwanggi, 黃芪) reinforce spleen qi; longan flesh (yonganyuk, 龍眼肉) and sour jujube seed (sanjoin, 酸棗仁) nourish heart blood; polygala (wonji, 遠志) calms the heart-spirit. The following modifications are made for children:
- Severe fright: Add mother-of-pearl (jinjumo, 珍珠母), abalone shell (seokgyeolmyeong, 石決明) — sedative spirit-calming
- Severely reduced appetite: Add hawthorn (sansa, 山楂), malt (maega, 麥芽) — promote digestion and strengthen the spleen
- With night terrors: Add polygonum stem (yagyodeung, 夜交藤), albizia bark (haphwanpi, 合歡皮) — sleep stabilization
The importance of combined play therapy
Herbal and acupuncture treatment alone may not fully resolve a child's psychological trauma. Gradual exposure through play is effective. For example:
- Form positive associations with cars by playing with toy cars
- Sit in a parked car → take short trips → gradually extend the distance
- Repeat consistent reassurance from parents — "It's okay, you're safe"
- Give the child a sense of control by allowing them to get out when they wish
When Korean medicine calming treatment and play therapy are combined, most children show meaningful improvement within 4 to 8 weeks. Leaving hypersensitive reactions to "sort themselves out" can cause them to persist for a long time, so early intervention is recommended.
